‘Traces’
Begins Tuesday 18th June 2024, 10am - 1pm
5 weeks, £200
Booking deadline: 03.06.24
Tutor: rachel burchell
Traces: barely detectable; a mark left by something passed; signs and evidence of something past; of a course or path one follows - interweaving understandings of this one word.
How do we trace our connection with the natural world? What traces are left on us from our interaction with nature, or vice versa? Are only traces becoming a reality in our present climate crisis? Which visual language best communicates the tracks we follow?
Questions and thoughts to explore as we respond to natural imagery that is pertinent to participants and produce work that is emotionally connected and resonant to them.
This is a 5 week course looking at ways we can connect with Nature: being inspired by it; using materials respectfully foraged from it and practicing processes that do not harm it. You will be supported as you develop skills including natural ink and pigment making and their use, papermaking and eco printing. A given theme will help guide your creativity as you produce a body of work, and creative practitioners whose work relates to this theme or processes will be reflected on. You will be given ways to explore further outside the studio if you wish.
This is a course for those with no experience; those wanting to extend their creative practice to embrace more sustainable processes or those looking for ways to integrate a theme into their natural ways of working. There is a focus on wellbeing; embracing the serendipity of unexpected results and the joy of connection.

During each 10 week Portfolio course you will be guided through the creative process and you will develop a body of creative work that is personal to you and demonstrates your own ideas and responses to the project theme. Due to the popularity of this course, we have developed new introductory and advanced level projects (suitable for those that have already undertaken Portfolio courses with us previously). |
I enrolled with Art Pocket to sharpen up my creative thinking and enhance my art practice. I’ve learned new techniques, improved and built on my skills. Each project with Hannelore has been a thoroughly enjoyable challenge, involving exploration, experiments and visits. |
This is a course that is accessible for all levels and abilities, our cohorts include individuals wanting to come and join in for leisure and personal wellbeing, those who are looking to progress onto further or higher education as well as people who have perhaps studied creative subjects in a past life and are wanting to refresh their skills and knowledge.
Stage 1: EXPLORE
Within the first 5 weeks of the course you will be introduced to a range of media and processes that may include; print, drawing, painting, textiles and 3D techniques. You will be supported in the development of these skills and will produce a body of work which responds to a given theme. You will be introduced to creative practitioners that are relevant to the theme and encouraged to explore these further and continue to gather visual research away from the studio.
Stage 2: NAVIGATE
Throughout this stage you will focus on the development of media and materials that interest and excite you. You will further develop and extend work made in the first stage and explore ideas and concepts that are personal to you. You will participate in group discussion and 1-1 tutorials in order to broaden your ideas and approach to your work and develop confidence in talking about your creative practice.
By the end of the course, students will have covered all the fundamental skills within the creative process and achieved a thematic body of work that demonstrates personal ideas and approaches.
Students that have completed 'portfolio' have successfully progressed onto FE and HE courses, creative employment & self-employment

Introductory Level
(For new participants), Wednesdays "Journey" Begins 17th April 2024, 9.45-1.45pm (no session on 29th May) 8 weeks, £280 Whether documenting a journey from A to B; exploring and responding to places; or using historical or personal journeys in order to better understand identity, artists have used different kinds of journeys to inspire their art over centuries. Journey can refer to an actual physical journey – travelling from one place to another, or describe the journeys we make in life: such as personal experiences that involve an element of self-discovery or more generally the journey through life – growing up or getting old. Beginning at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, we will make our own physical journey around the sculpture park looking and responding to the environment and carrying out creative activities that explore objects within the gallery collection that connect with the theme. Over the ‘explore’ phase students will respond to a collection of objects that are pertinent to them and make a range of responses to them using drawing, 2D and 3D techniques. The theme is aimed to be open enough to enable students to find their own connections and visual stimuli and develop a body of work that is personally interesting to them in the 'Navigate' stage of the course. |
Advanced Level
(For those that have already undertaken at least 2 portfolio courses with us before), Tuesdays "Idea: Process: Play" Begins 16th April 2024, 10am-2pm (no session on 27th May) 8 weeks, £280 In this advanced portfolio course, the onus for deciding on a specific theme will be on the students. Students will come with a collection of sources that they wish to respond to. We will explore the process of making and embrace ‘play ‘ through different materials and techniques with their sources in mind. In the intial workshops each week, we will look at 1-3 artists; exploring the materials and creative practices that they employ in order to communicate idea/meaning/atmosphere through their creative work. This course is designed to encourage students to delve a little more deeply into their creative practice and that of others. The course will include opportunity for group discussion and supportive feedback to one another. Time is also built in for focused 1-1 tutorials with individuals to support their creative development. This course is for previous Art Direction or Portfolio students. |
